Happy Easter

Muli Bwangi from Zambia!

This is going to be a quick update from Zambia as I am sitting in an internet cafe on Easter Sunday.  That is kinda weird!  We have had a great time so far and are learning much about the African culture.  We went out with helpers to observe different locations yesterday.  I went with Christine who took me to her township and we walked around the market.  It was very interesting and I wish I could post pictures but I did not bring my camera cord...catepillars are a staple food in the markets.  There were piles of them along with tomatoes, onions, potatoes, cornmeal and peanuts.  We saw many live chickens being caried home for dinner too.

What was most interesting for me was the young children and the level of responsibility they are given.  We saw one little girl in the market with her little brother.  She was carrying a live chicken, loaf of bread and greens.  She was probably about 6 years old and the boy was maybe 3 or 4.  I was thinking about my children being sent to the market by themselves and I can definitely say we would not be eating very well for dinner!!!  We would be having sodas and candy!  :-)  Little brother would probably be lost along the way too.

Tim went to a different area and said where he went was pretty depressing.  As soon as they walked into the township, there were many bars and many people who were drunk.  As they continued to walk through the township he said that it got better towards the houses.  The interesting thing we learned is that "place" is very important to Africans.  If you are around the home, you have certain manners and behavior that are expected but the market area has a different set of behaviors that are okay.  I guess we kinda have somethings in common but place is very important here.

Today we had worship together as a team and then we got to come into the city to explore on our own.  Tomorrow we will go out again with our helpers and try to meet people in the markets.  Looking forward to it!

The kids are going to school everyday and are having a great time!  Yesterday they went to the water park and got very sunburned but they also slept very well!  Thank you for your prayers.
