Just a quick trip to the Equator :-)

Last Saturday, we decided to get out of the city and head to the country, our destination was the equator.  Several friends had told us about the demonstration they do with water at the equator and we thought the children would enjoy seeing it.  There are several locations to choose from but we went to one about 4 hours away...kinda  a long day trip but the scenery was beautiful along the way.  It was really nice to get out of the city and breathe the fresh air.  Here are some sights we saw...

Not sure what happened to this little guy but he was guarding the cart.

Even in Africa, we have all of our gear for roadtrips!

Banana sellers trying to make a living

4 hours later, we made it!

That was really fun and then after we went into each of the shops (dukas) and looked around.  I got a bit tired of the sellers trying to get me to buy something but Tim practiced his Kiswahili and got a few good bargains.

On the way back, we stopped several places along the road and made some other purchases.  The first was some chairs made out of cypress, they are a bit rough but they only cost us 400 ksh each (less than $5!)  so they were hard to pass up.  We also saw Hotel Starbucks, but we did not have time to see if they had any coffee :-).  We were trying to get back to the city before dark.

Here are several markets that we passed...

Here are the banana sellers again, poor man has a tough choice!

The next stop was for fruit and vegetables.
The colors do not show very well in the picture but the mangos and papayas were brilliant...too bad my family does not like them.

And then later to buy pineapples, which was the highlight of Adrienne's day.

The people were really funny, trying to sell me mini pineapples which they were holding flat so I could not see how big they were.  Only one lady had big pineapples.  I did practice a bit of Kiswahili and she came down a touch on her price but remained firm because she knew that I wanted the ones she was selling.  Altogether, I bought 3 pineapples for 200 ksh ($2.20) and they are very sweet, we have already eaten 2 of the 3.
